Without Warning

When Critical Information Fails to Reach Deaf Nigerians

Sudden outbreaks of violence threaten communities across Nigeria, but too often Deaf people miss the warnings that give others a chance to escape. Without Warning follows Deaf Nigerians living with the consequences of inaccessible emergency communication during the nation’s growing security crisis. “In dangerous emergencies, a Deaf person can unknowingly walk into the middle of the danger,” says Deaf advocate Ayoade Beyioku-Alase, recalling how his family narrowly survived a sudden escalation of violence after missing warnings that would have given them a chance to flee. “It all comes down to information.” Through the stories of Deaf survivors, Without Warning shows that access to information can become a matter of survival.
